Summer Art Camp - 2008

Week-long (Monday – Friday) art camps are scheduled for the weeks of:
1. - July 21 – 25
2. - July 28 - August 1
3. - August 4 – 8
4. - August 11 – 15
5. - August 18 – 22
6. - August 25 – 29.

Separate programs will be held for:
5 – 7-year-olds & 8 – 11-year-olds.

Morning sessions are 9 am – noon.
Afternoon sessions are 1 – 4 pm.
Full day sessions are 9 am – 4 pm (Don’t forget your lunch!)
           
Half-day programs are $190 or $160 for Palos Verdes Art Center members
Full-day programs are $260 or $230 for Art Center members.

Explore the magic of flight while creating bird puppets, space-ships, pinwheels and kites.  Paint a paper lantern hot-air balloon; construct a butterfly sculpture with wings.

Explore Native American culture and the world of the animal spirit. Construct a headdress and a Native American shield with your own special animal design, make a unique coloring book and much more. Walk softly on the earth by using found and recycled materials.

Use sculpture and drawing techniques in a mixed media workshop. Design your fantasy world in a wooden shadow box using toys, handmade paper, metal and natural objects. Then add imaginary characters. Draw landscapes and seascapes with oil pastels, acrylic paints and watercolors

The Circus is back in town! Use bright paints and an image of your favorite animal to design a graphic circus poster. Fashion clay and paints into a mini clown car carrying a cast of characters and animals. Build a 3-D diorama with you as the ringmaster training a sculpted balancing bear! Make a papier mache bowler hat plus a wearable silly clown tie or ringmaster cape. Decorate a picture frame with circus colors and patterns.

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain. Join other cultures in welcoming the rain with ceremonies and traditions. Explore the hand-building, painting and assembling of native artifacts. We will end our week with a celebration using our finished artifacts to celebrate the rhythm of the falling rain.

Explore drawing and painting from abstract art to realism using techniques of the Old Masters and tricks from modern artists. Be inspired by famous artists and artworks while creating 3-D paintings on paper, foam core, wood and metal with oil pastels, acrylic paints and watercolor pencils.

Re-create Robinson Crusoe’s adventures in his makeshift 3-D jungle hideaway! Use water-based oils and paint on canvas the only treasure that survived from his boat—an authentic oil painting. Jungle tribes are closing in – carve the menacing face in faux stone. Log your inventive escape attempts and sketch beautiful fish or treacherous sharks. Design a camouflage scarf for sun protection. Sculpt an island animal—either friend or foe—with plaster strips and make a scorpion or flower necklace with clay and shells.
