CERAMICS
Clay must be purchased from the Palos Verdes Art Center at $10 a bag. Glazes and firings included in class fees.

BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE

HAND-BUILDING
Roy Kunisaki (RK-1)
Mondays, 7/6-8/24, 9am-noon
$180, Members $150

Basic through advanced hand-building using hand tools and sculptural techniques. Make pinch and coil pots; slabs; functional plates, bowls and cups in multiples; one-part molds, and small scale figures. Low-fire and post-firing decorative techniques. Wheel potters welcome; however, demonstrations geared to hand-building and low-fire techniques.


BEGINNING WHEEL
Roy Kunisaki (RK-3)
Mondays, 7/6-8/24, 6:30-9:30pm
$180, Members $150

Basic wheel throwing skills, glazing and decorating. Traditional, raku and saggar firings offer unlimited creative opportunities.


Beginning/Intermediate Wheel
Roy Kunisaki (RK-4) 
Tuesdays, 7/7-8/25, 9am-noon
$180, Members $150

Learn to center, throw, trim, glaze and decorate mugs, cups, bowls and plates. Intermediate students progress to lidded pots, teapots and multiples. Individual coaching. Hand-builders welcome; however, demonstrations geared to wheel-throwing.


INTRODUCTION TO SILVER & BRONZE CLAY
Kent & Hiromi Hirakawa (KH-1)
Tuesdays, 7/7-8/25, 12:30-3:30pm
$180, Members $150

Create original jewelry beginning with the basic techniques of pendant and ring making.  Become comfortable with silver/bronze clay making, firing and finishing techniques.  Techniques are very specific, but personal creativity in design is only limited by imagination. Class will be separated into two groups, both learning the same techniques but those with no experience are advised to start with bronze clay, which is significantly less expensive. Progress to silver clay at any time. Basic tool kit ($35) and materials available for purchase in class.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED

INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS

Refine hand-building, throwing and glazing skills. Focus on individual projects, set-up and maintenance.


Intermediate/ADVANCED CERAMICS

Wednesdays, 7/8-8/26, 9am-noon
$180, Members $150

Learn advanced ceramic techniques via demonstrations, discussions and studio time.  Explore glazing and firing. Course adapts to students' needs.


FUN & FUNCTIONAL CERAMICS
Jan Napolitan (JAN-1)                           
Wednesdays, 7/8-8/26, 6:30-9:30pm
$180, Members $150

Focus on functional everyday forms. Wheel-throwing, slab construction, measurements for sets, etc. A weekly demonstration of specific forms, lids, handles and glaze choices. Critiques of finished work. Intermediate and advanced students only.


EXPERIMENTAL CERAMICS
Scott Washko (SW-2)
Fridays, 7/10-8/28, 12:30-3:30pm
$180, Members $150

Try new construction methods and use familiar ones in new ways. Hand-building and wheel-throwing. Make extruder dies and molds. Open up to new possibilities. Class adapts to students’ skills.

No Early Bird Discount
Designed for independent work, sessions are open to current Palos Verdes Art Center ceramics students ONLY. (Exceptions may be made for health, financial need or long-distance travel).
