For Cold War East and West Germany, the creation of art and its reception and theorization were closely linked to political systems: the Western liberal democracy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Eastern communist dictatorship of the German Democratic Republic. Reacting against the Nazi legacy, both Germanys revived pre-World War II national artistic traditions. Yet they developed distinctive versions of modern and postmodern art either in accord with or in opposition to the political cultures. This upcoming exhibition at LACMA includes major works by artists Hans Haacke, Heinz Mack, Sigmar Polke, Raffael Rheinsberg, Gerhard Richter and Dieter Roth. Through their art gain deeper understanding of the political and cultural fabric of the Cold War and identify how art and the artistic process reflected two very different postwar worlds. Field trip in week 5. (Museum fees not included.)

GREAT ARTISTS SERIES: GIANTS OF MODERNISM     NEW!
VAN GOGH’S LIFE, LEGEND &D LEGACY
Jill Kiefer (JK-7)
Wednesdays, 1/14-2/11, 9am-noon
5 classes
$110, Members $80

Vincent van Gogh among the greatest of the Dutch painters and Post-Impressionists. His arresting use of bold colors, vigorous brushwork and contoured forms dramatically influenced Fauvism and Expressionism. Largely because of his extensive letters, which were published after his death, Van Gogh is viewed in the popular imagination as the quintessential tortured artist. However, he was the first to acknowledge that he was at his most sane while painting. He knew exactly what he was doing. Separate facts from fiction and become acquainted with the real Vincent by examining his life and work in the context of his own time, his far reaching influence on modern and contemporary art and his enduring popularity.

GREAT ARTISTS SERIES: GIANTS OF MODERNISM     NEW!
PICASSO’S MYSTERY, MAGIC & MYTH
Jill Kiefer (JK-8)
Wednesdays, 2/18-3/18, 9am-noon
5 classes
$110, Members $80

Spanish artist Pablo Picasso was one of the 20th century’s greatest, most prolific and most influential artists. With Georges Braque, he created Cubism, changing forever the way we “see” the world. Possessing astonishing powers of invention, Picasso continually evolved his style. The body of his work virtually parallels the entire development of 20th century modern art, and his influence continues to be profoundly felt in the 21st.  While he worked as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer, this class will focus on his paintings and development in that arena. Analyze the misunderstanding, criticism and mythology surrounding his life and work. His profound belief that his work would keep him alive is considered a superstition. However, examination of his enormous influence will ultimately prove him right!
