The Docent Council

The term docent is from the Latin docere, meaning to lead or to teach. At the Palos Verdes Art Center, members of the Docent Council, organized in 1981, act as knowledgeable guides introducing visitors to the more than 20 exhibitions each year. Docents are trained to help visitors learn to look at art and to serve as facilitators between art object and viewer. Practicing an interactive questioning approach, docents enlighten their audience and encourage them to make self-discoveries and find meaning in art through discussion and careful looking.

The only prerequisites are a desire to learn about art and then to teach what you have learned to both adults and students. If you are interested in learning more about the program or becoming a trained docent, please call Gail Phinney, education programs director, (310) 541-2479.
